Reaching the historic Dunnottar Castle requires physical effort. The medieval fortress sits on a 1.4-hectare headland surrounded by steep cliffs. To enter the site, you must walk down to the coast and climb back up to the gatehouse.

How many steps are there at Dunnottar Castle?

You must navigate roughly 200 steep and uneven steps to reach the castle entrance.

The path down from the mainland and back up to the gatehouse is physically demanding. There are benches placed halfway down the path if you need a rest. You should wear sturdy, flat walking shoes or hiking boots.

Is Dunnottar Castle wheelchair accessible?

No, Dunnottar Castle is not accessible for wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

Because the fortress sits on a 160-foot rocky headland, the only way in is via the steep stairs. There are no ramps or elevators. Visitors with severe mobility limitations will not be able to enter the castle itself.

Families traveling with babies or toddlers should use a baby carrier instead. The drops are unprotected in places, so children must be closely supervised at all times.

Can I see the castle without climbing the steps?

Yes, you can view the ruins from the mainland cliffs without descending the stairs.

The Cliff-Top Viewpoint is located on the mainland before the steps begin. This spot provides a classic vantage point of the castle framed by the North Sea. It takes about 10 minutes to enjoy this area, and it is flat enough for most visitors to reach safely.

Does weather affect accessibility?

The North Sea wind is cold year-round. During high winds, snow, or icy conditions, the castle may close at short notice for safety. Always pack a windproof and waterproof jacket.

What is the terrain like on the walking paths?

The paths near the castle and from Stonehaven feature dirt terrain and uphill sections.

The coastal path from Stonehaven harbour takes 30 to 40 minutes to walk. It is a scenic route but includes uneven dirt paths. If you drive, the car park is about 300 metres from the castle entrance over a mostly flat path until the steps begin.
