How long is the Stonehaven to Dunnottar Castle walk?
The hike takes 30 to 40 minutes in one direction.
You will cover a distance of 1.6 miles from the town to the fortress. Budget extra time for taking photos at the cliff-top viewpoints. The return trip will take about the same amount of time.
Where does the coastal path start?
The path officially starts near Stonehaven harbour.
You can walk from the town centre directly to the harbour area. From there, follow the signs pointing south toward the cliffs. The path immediately climbs uphill as you leave the town.

What is the trail terrain like?
The path consists of uneven dirt trails and uphill climbs.
This is not a paved sidewalk. The route requires walking over rough earth and navigating steep sections. It is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.
What should I wear for the cliff walk?
Wear sturdy hiking boots and a windproof jacket.
The North Sea wind is cold throughout the year, even in summer. Pack warm layers and a waterproof jacket. Bring a water bottle, as facilities are limited to a small kiosk in the car park.

What are the best viewpoints on the route?
The path provides several vantage points overlooking the 160-foot cliffs.
As you approach the 1.4-hectare headland, you will reach the main cliff-top viewpoint. This spot looks directly at the castle ruins framed by the sea. Arrive at sunrise or late afternoon for the best light.
Can I walk my dog on the coastal path?
Yes, dogs are allowed on the coastal trail.
You must keep your dog on a lead near the cliff edges for safety. If you plan to enter the castle ruins, note that dogs are only allowed in the outdoor grounds. They cannot go inside the historic buildings.

What happens in bad weather?
The coastal path is exposed, and the castle closes in severe weather.
High winds, snow, or icy conditions make the cliff-top walk dangerous. Dunnottar Castle is prone to sudden closure at short notice for safety reasons. Check the forecast before starting your hike.
Questions travellers ask
Do I need to buy tickets for the walk?
